Pat Welsh (born Patricia A. Carroll; February 11, 1915 – January 26, 1995) was an American film actress, known as the raspy voice of E.T. in the 1982 film ''E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial''. ==Career== Welsh only appeared in three films, most famously as the voice of E.T. in the 1982 film ''E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial''. When Welsh was in a camera store (Seawood Photo, San Anselmo, Calif.), Ben Burtt, the sound designer of the film's character E.T., heard her talking and asked her to audition for the role. Her only movie appearance was in the 1940 WW1 film Waterloo Bridge. As a chain smoker, she had a raspy voice that gave E.T. his trademark speech sound.〔Callo, Jim (August 23, 1982). "(Revealing His Secrets at Last: Director Steven Spielberg Takes the Wraps Off E.T. )", ''People'' 18 (8). Retrieved April 5, 2013.〕 She also had been hired by George Lucas to be the voice of Boushh in the film ''Return of the Jedi''. Lucas had said he was in the laundromat when he thought her ambiguous voice was perfect.
